This completely editable LEGO sight word building activity is a simple, hands-on printable game that you can customize for your own classroom or child. Just choose four sight words, watch them generate, print the playmats you want to use, grab some colorful building pieces, and you're ready to play! Young readers need lots of opportunities to see and read the words they're learning. This stacking game turns sight word practice into a building challenge, perfect for tactile learners, TKers, kindergarten students, or really any kid learning sight words.
Kids look at the sight words in the 16 boxes, find the matching building configuration on the key, and then build a LEGO stack to match.
Teachers all teach sight words in a different order, so we can NOT just use some premade worksheet! These words need to be relevant to what words YOUR student is learning.
Choose words from the current week's list, words your students are struggling with, or words you've already introduced that need a little extra practice.
The ability to customize the words makes this game especially useful for small groups and differentiated practice. You'll notice some of the templates have only one Lego, while others have stacks up to 4 tall. The simplest way to use it for very beginning learners, would be to use the sight word playmats with one Lego and then work up.
Pick the four sight words you want your child or students to practice. Input the four words into the fields in the key, and click the GENERATE button. The 4 sight words will populate the 16 boxes randomly on the left side. If you don't like the way they populated randomly, just click GENERATE again!
I recommend laminating it so you can use your mats again and again. This is my favorite Amazon Basics laminator and laminating sheets that has lasted me years and years.
LEGO bricks are perfect for this activity, but you don't actually need LEGO bricks specifically.
Use whatever colorful stacking pieces you already have!

The important thing is that kids have pieces they can stack and match to the colors on the mat. Want to switch up the colors? The last two sight word playmats are black and white so you can also put in whatever colors you'd like! After working at a Title I school with few resources, I recognize that color printing is not always an option, so I made that option to make your life easier as well as mine.
Kids read a sight word and check the key on the right side of the page. Then they build!
For example, if "the" is matched with blue on top of yellow, your student would build a blue on top of a yellow stack and place it on top of each word "the" on the sight word game mat.
The game is complete when the student has placed the correct stack on each word; there should be 4 of each, so it's rather easy to check!
The biggest advantage of this activity is that it doesn't feel like traditional sight word practice.
Kids get to touch the materials, build towers, and create something while working on their reading skills.
And let's face it: if you put LEGO/DUPLO bricks on the table, there's a pretty good chance kids are going to want to play. Instead of saying, "Time to practice sight words," you can say, "Let's build!"
As a teacher, one of my favorite things about this activity is how little prep it requires.
Just choose the four words you want to target, print the page, laminate it, and pull out your building pieces. Working on more words? Make two different mats!
There are even black and white editable versions so that you can save on colored ink and choose your own colors for the stacks.
